Predicting polydisperse granular segregation

چکیده

Most granular materials in industrial applications and natural settings are size-polydisperse, but most models and simulations of segregation consider only bidisperse particle distributions. Here, we extend our recently developed theoretical advection–diffusion–segregation model to polydisperse particle distributions. To test the theoretical approach, we model and simulate grains log-normally distributed by size in a chute fl ow. In steady state, material near the free surface is dominated by large particles, whereas the lower regions are composed of mostly small particles. The segregation pattern depends on a single dimensionless control parameter, which is a function of the particle sizes, the diffusion coeffi cient, the shear rate, and the fl owing layer depth. Interestingly, for all values of the control parameter, the overall log normal particle size distribution is approximately maintained at each spatial location, but with different mean and variance than the overall particle distribution. To confi rm the theoretical results, we use discrete element method (DEM) simulations using a general purpose graphics processing unit. Quantitative agreement is found between theory and DEM simulations. Funded by the Dow Chemical Company.

Segregation of Polydisperse Granular Media in the Presence of a Temperature Gradient

Granular media are examined with the focus on polydisperse mixtures in the presence of two localized heat-baths. If the two driving energies are similar, the large particles prefer to stay in the ‘cold’ regions of the system – as far away from the energy source as possible. If one of the temperatures is larger than the other, the cold region is shifted towards the colder reservoir; if the tempe...

The Role of Friction in Mixing and Segregation of Granular Material

The process of size segregation in a model system of granular matter, consisting of 1600 spherical poly-disperse particles stirred by a rectangular bar moving periodically in the horizontal direction, was modelled by the discrete element method under different values of dynamic friction coefficient of the particle material. It has been shown that the dynamic friction coefficient influences the ...

Segregation of granular mixtures in a spherical tumbler.

Segregation of polydisperse granular materials in rotating containers is a ubiquitous but still not satisfactorily understood phenomenon. This study describes axial segregation of bidisperse granular mixtures of glass beads in a spherical container, rotating about its horizontal axis. Depending on the filling fraction of the mixer and on the composition of the mixture, qualitatively different s...

M ar 2 00 1 The equation of state for almost elastic , smooth , polydisperse granular gases for arbitrary density

Simulation results of dense granular gases with particles of different size are compared with theoretical predictions concerning the pair-correlation functions, the collison rate, the energy dissipation, and the mixture pressure. The effective particle-particle correlation function, which enters the equation of state in the same way as the correlation function of monodisperse granular gases, de...
